Baby footprints in a heart with a name on the side
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two baby footprints arranged in a heart shape, with the script name Hayden Abel set inside the heart. The footprints are shaded in soft black and grey with smooth gradients, while the lettering is fine, dark and crisp. It is photographed close up in warm, sepia-toned light, with the design centred on the skin above a dark waistband.

The ink was too thick that morning, so I thinned it with a spoon of linseed and swore at Mr Oakes under my breath while the treadle ground on. He was at the Crown, as he was most Tuesdays, and the shop smelled of paraffin and wet card. Dora Venn came in at half past ten with a baby wrapped in a shawl the colour of weak tea. She didn't wait for me to clear the bench before she lifted the small feet and set them down on the slab.

I inked the soles with a roller, light as breath, and Dora pressed each foot to the card while the child complained at the cold. Walter Lusk stood by the door with his cap in both hands. He had asked for a heart. He had asked for the name in the copperplate we kept for wedding invitations, and I told him the script would look finer, and he nodded like a man agreeing to something he couldn't afford.
When the print was dry he didn't take the card. He wanted two. "One for the mantel," he said, "and one I'll carry on the boat." He was shipping out of Grimsby on the Monday train. "The sea doesn't keep anything," he said, "so I'd rather keep them in my pocket than on a wall." He folded the second card in four and buttoned it inside his coat before I could say the ink might smudge.
That night I cleaned the rollers and then, because the light still held, I inked my own feet and printed them beside an empty heart, leaving the middle clear. In the morning Mr Oakes asked what I'd been doing with his good card stock. I told him I was practising. It was true, though not the way he meant.
