Baby goat on clouds with a rainbow on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A dark grey baby goat stands on a cluster of pink and light blue clouds, with a red-to-yellow-to-green rainbow arc behind it. The words OH MY GOAT sit beneath in black lettering, flanked by small yellow stars and a scatter of black and coloured dots. Bold black outlines, soft shading and saturated colour give it a bright, illustrative look on the upper thigh.

The kid has eaten the second page of the guest register, and Mrs Harcourt is standing in the doorway of the snug with a tea towel over one shoulder, looking at you as though the snow is your fault too. You came in off the Bethel road an hour ago with ice in your eyebrows, so as far as the inn is concerned you are now responsible for the goat.

Her name is Pearl. She is dark as a coal scuttle, with a pale tuft on her chin that makes her look faintly put out, and she has the run of the place since the barn roof gave way under Tuesday's drift. She sleeps across the foot of the hearth. She follows Mr Harcourt up the stairs at bedtime like a lodger who has paid in advance. Every few hours she stands at the frosted window with her forefeet on the sill and stares at the white road, as if someone promised her a sunrise and is running late.

The landlord's daughter has painted a rainbow on the back wall of the taproom, in gouache, the colours of the sky after a shower. Pearl has decided it is an invitation. At midnight she walks past the card players and the sleeping spaniel and stops underneath it, a small black silhouette against the red, orange and green, and the whole room goes quiet to watch.

"Oh my goat," says Mrs Harcourt softly, and for once nobody laughs. Then Pearl lowers her head, nudges a crumb of shortbread off the hearth with her nose, and the snow outside begins, very gently, to stop.
