Colour tattoo of a cartoon cow with yellow hair inside a red heart outline on the forearm, with the word moolissa in script and a small arrow.

Cartoon cow in a red heart on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a cartoon cow with a brown and white face, wide eyes, a tan muzzle and a yellow fringe, set inside a red heart outline with a soft red wash. The word moolissa is written in black script above, with a small red arrow beside it, and a brown arrow sits lower on the left. The bold black outlines and flat colour fills give it a playful, illustrative look against a plain skin background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Frost had furred the gate latch again, and Moolissa stood at the paddock rail with her fringe frozen into a yellow fan, looking as surprised as she always did. Mrs Heald at Lower Crake Farm had given up trimming it in October. "You look like a Sunday hat," she had told her, and Moolissa had taken this as a compliment.

The other cows were sensible about winter. They stood close in the shed and chewed the hay with the grim patience of accountants. Moolissa had a plan. Across the lane, on the far side of the hedge, a bull called Bertram had been sending her notes through the gap in the fencing since Michaelmas, folded small and tucked under a stone. The notes were all spelled wrong. The last one said only: heart is red like the arrow, come to the gap at dusk.

At dusk the snow had started again, fine as icing sugar. Moolissa pushed through the hedge, her fringe snagging on the blackthorn, and found Bertram waiting under the oak, looking if anything more alarmed than she was. Neither of them spoke. Then he shuffled forward and dropped a bundle of frost-bitten carrots at her feet, and she ate every one of them, slowly, while he watched with his hooves pulled in.

When Mrs Heald came out with the lantern she found two sets of hoofprints going through the gap and back again, and one cow standing in the wrong field, looking pleased with herself. She did not trim the fringe. She tucked a fresh note into the hedge herself, printed in careful capitals: MOOLISSA, STAY IN YOUR OWN FIELD. Bertram, who could not read, came anyway.
