Colour tattoo of a grey cartoon donkey wearing a green and yellow striped hat, with red blood splatters and lettering beneath, on a forearm.

Cartoon donkey in striped hat on forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A grey cartoon donkey with a green and yellow striped hat sits in the centre of the design, with its ears poking through the hat and a sly sideways glance. Red splatters surround the figure, and black lettering reading CAAAAAARL runs along the bottom. Thin dark outlines define the shapes, with flat colour fills and light grey shading on the donkey's face.

Dear Brother Anselm, You asked me to stop writing about the donkey, but the donkey will not stop writing about itself, so you must forgive me. Since Lady Day the beast has worn the striped cap the novices sewed for the Feast of Fools, green and yellow, and it refuses to take it off. Brother Osric says the cap is a sign of grace. I say a donkey in a jester's hat is a sign of nothing except that the cellarer has been raiding the poor box again.

Its mischief is worse than its hat. Yesterday it wandered into the scriptorium while I was copying the Psalter and pushed its head through the window, sly as a clerk, and looked at me sideways as though it had read the Rule and found it wanting. Then the wine barrels split in the undercroft, and the red ran across the flagstones in long streaks that looked like the Vespers candles had bled. The donkey stood in the middle of it all, lifted its great grey head, and brayed the prior's name across the cloister. CAAAAARL, it cried, over and over, until the whole house came running. The prior was not even awake.

I have hidden the cap twice. Brother Osric has found it both times and put it back on the donkey's ears with great tenderness. It wears the thing at Compline now and seems to believe the psalms are sung in its honour. The prior has written to the bishop to ask whether a beast may be admitted as a novice. I replied that the donkey has better manners than the cellarer, and that if the bishop wants a convert he may come himself and take the hat off the creature.

Your brother in the Lord, Thomas
