Bacon strips on a lower leg
Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo
A bold outlined tattoo of two strips of bacon crosses the lower leg, with red and pink striped meat and cream fat edges. Black outlines and soft shading give the strips volume, and small olive-green dots and speckles sit around the base. The design fills the centre of the frame against a plain skin background and dark surface.

The second strip always curled, and Dell swore it did it on purpose. I laid them out on the flat-top at six, the way Ada taught me before her hip gave out, and watched the fat slump from white to gold while the wind pushed grit against the diner's one wide window. Route 93 ran past the door with nothing on it but heat shimmer and the odd lorry full of melons.

Nobody came in before seven. The truckers stopped at the Gas-N-Go down the road now, where the coffee tasted of plastic and nobody asked how you slept. Dell did ask. He was the only regular, a long drink of a man who sat at the end of the counter with his hat on the stool beside him and read the paper a day late. Every morning he ordered the bacon, crisp, and every morning he sent back the piece that had not quite burned.
One Tuesday he didn't come. I cooked the two strips anyway, laid them on a plate, and caught myself saying his name to the empty stool while the grease spat. Then the bell over the door rang, and it was only a girl in a dusty dress asking the way to the lake that had dried up before her grandmother was born. I gave her the good plate and a napkin folded like a fan.
Dell turned up Thursday with a bag of pecans and an apology about the road. He ate his bacon in silence, then pushed the plate back an inch. The strips had fused in the pan where they touched, a neat red knot in the middle, and he laughed until his coffee went cold. I left the knot on his plate every morning after that.
