Colour tattoo of a skull made from two fried eggs with orange yolk eyes and crossed bacon strips below, on a calf.

Fried egg skull with crossed bacon

Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a skull formed from two fried eggs, with the yolks as eyes and a grey nose cavity at the centre. Two crossed strips of bacon sit beneath it, like a skull and crossbones. The eggs and bacon use black outlines with soft grey shading, and the yolks and bacon are filled with orange and red ink. The design is centred on the leg with plain skin around it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Saucy Mab had not taken a prize in eleven weeks, and the crew had begun to mutter that the Jolly Roger was too dull to frighten anyone. Quartermaster Dunn wanted a new flag stitched from red sailcloth. Cook Hettie Farrow said she would make it herself, and nobody argued, because nobody aboard had eaten anything but salt beef since Madeira.

She fried two eggs in the lard pot until the whites crisped at the edges, then pressed them flat on the cutting board with the back of a ladle. The yolks made perfect eyes. She cut a nose from a scrap of burnt rind and laid two rashers of bacon beneath, crossed like the bones on a grave marker. Then she stitched the lot onto a black sheet with thread pulled from her own apron hem, while the men stood in a line to watch.

The flag went up at dawn off the Azores. A merchant brig, the Cordelia Pym, saw it, fired one warning shot, and ran up her colours in a hurry. Her captain came aboard with his hat in his hands and asked whether the cook had any rules about surrender. Hettie told him the eggs would go cold if he kept her waiting. He was in the galley before she finished the sentence, begging for the bacon.

The Saucy Mab kept that flag for twenty years. Whenever it rose, the gulls came down to circle the mast, and the ships on the horizon turned about without a shot being fired. Old hands swore the yolks still ran in the wind on the darkest nights.
