Band tattoos on two ring fingers

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands rest on a wooden table, with the ring fingers of both hands carrying solid black and grey band tattoos. The left hand also shows dark tattooed linework at the top edge of the frame, near the wrist. The shallow focus and warm, soft lighting put the rings and the purple nails in focus against the blurred background.

The night the lift broke on the east wing, Ada Penhallow carried a tray of cold tea down four flights of stairs and found Tomas already at the wooden table in the staff canteen, his palms pressed flat on the boards as if to keep them from lifting.

On the wards they said that two people who worked the same shift and swore to meet at that table every night would never be parted by a death on their ward. Ada had her bands drawn on the winter before, in the same grey ink the surgeons used for marking, and Tomas had his the week after. Nobody had ever asked whether the promise worked. They only said it had been kept by those who kept it.

That night Tomas was late. Ada sat with the tea going skin-cold and counted the clock on the wall until it passed four. When he came in at last his face was grey and his coat was still buttoned wrong. The boy in bed nine had asked for his mother, he said, and there was nobody to send for, so he had sat with him until the boy slept.

Ada said nothing. She put her hand down on the table beside his, the two bands close enough to touch in the lamplight. Outside, the window turned from black to the colour of dishwater, and the ink on their fingers looked, for once, exactly like the morning.
