Fine line bands across fingers

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand extends towards the viewer against a plain dark background, with soft directional light falling across the knuckles and the back of the wrist. Several fingers carry multiple thin, evenly spaced black horizontal lines wrapped fully around each digit, like narrow bands. The monochrome linework is crisp and the composition is minimal, with the hand centred and the rest of the frame left in shadow.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gatekeeper at Harrowmere took no coin for the road through the ruin. She took a line. For every traveller she let past the broken arch after dark, she marked one finger with soot dipped in ash-water, a thin band wrapped fully round so no sleeve could rub it away. By the third winter after the roof fell in, every finger on her right hand was banded to the knuckle, and the carters who stopped at the inn below had learned to ask her how many.

Nobody knew why she kept count. Some said her brother had gone up the moor road in a snowstorm and never come down, and that she meant to mark him as the last when he walked back through the arch. Others said she was simply a woman who liked a tally. She never said which story was hers. She hung the lantern on its iron hook, called each name into the dark, and wrote the number down with her thumb on the stone of the gatehouse wall.

One evening in spring a girl came up the road with a basket of eggs and no shoes worth the name. She asked for the ring finger, the one everyone said was the finger for those who meant to stay. The gatekeeper looked at the girl's bare feet for a long time and then at her own hand, crowded with lines.

She took the soot pot down from its shelf and turned her little finger over, the only one that had never carried a mark. 'Sit by the fire,' she said, 'and tomorrow you can count the road yourself.' She put the pot away. The lantern burned until morning, and nobody went through the arch that night at all.
