Barn owl in flight on upper back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A barn owl with its wings fully spread is tattooed centrally on the upper back, facing the viewer with a pale heart-shaped face and dark eyes. The feathers are rendered with soft shading and fine detail in black and grey, giving the bird a three-dimensional look. The plain skin and brick wall behind keep the focus on the tattoo.

The owl came out of the dark above the canal bridge just as your van reached it, pale as a dropped plate in the sodium light. You braked hard. It did not panic. It lifted off the parapet with its wings opening wider than the windscreen, and for a moment the whole street seemed to lean in and watch it pass over the rooftops of Sallow Street, where you had been sent at midnight to fix a lamp nobody had reported broken.

The council sheet said the column at number nine was out, but nobody had said why. You climbed the ladder with the torch clamped in your teeth and found the lamp housing full of dry grass and a row of mouse skulls, lined up neatly on the bracket as if someone had been keeping score. Below you the canal lay black and still, and the towpath ran away under a string of dead lamps that had gone dark one by one over the winter. Somewhere on the warehouse roof the owl gave a long rasp that was almost a question.
You cleared the housing, swapped the ballast and waited with your thumb on the switch. The light came up orange, then white, and the bridge jumped out of the night with every rivet showing. The owl was back on the parapet, watching you with eyes like two wet stones. It did not look at the lamp. It looked at you, as though you were the one who had come into its street uninvited.
When you climbed down the bird had gone and the towpath was lit end to end. You sat in the van with the engine ticking and wrote *Column nine: repaired* on the sheet. High above the warehouse a wing beat once, slow and certain, and the shadow it threw across the new light was the only thing on the whole street that did not need fixing.
