Bat, moon phases and cat face on fingers

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand held in a V shape against a plain pale background shows small black tattoos on three fingers. A bat outline sits on one finger, a row of four moon phases from crescent to full runs across the next, and a cat face with whiskers appears on the top finger. The linework is thin and the ink is solid black with no shading, and the black painted nails add contrast.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fourth night out of Valparaíso, Tomas Reyne counted the moon on his fingers because the chronometer had stopped again and the mate would not let anyone open its case. Crescent, half, gibbous, full. His grandmother had taught him to read the tides that way on the harbour wall at St Ives, and he trusted it more than brass. Tonight the moon hung low over the starboard rail, nearly whole and silver enough to throw his shadow across the deck.

The bat had come aboard at the Horn, clinging to a coil of halyard in the dark. Admiral, the grey tom who ran the galley stores, took one look at it and sat on the hatch to watch, tail wrapped neatly over his feet. Nobody had the heart to put it over the side. Tomas fed it crumbs of ship's biscuit from his palm, and it took them without fuss, slipping off at dusk to snap up the moths that gathered round the binnacle lamp and coming back before the bell for the middle watch.

On the seventh night the cat went missing. Tomas found him at last in the lamp locker, nose pressed against a folded chart that had been pinned under the lid since Cape Horn. Someone had drawn small circles in the margin, four of them, the last one filled in solid with ink. The bat was asleep on a nail above, wings folded like a dropped umbrella. Tomas looked at the chart, then at the moon through the hatch, and saw it was the same shape as the drawing. Tomorrow they would raise land, and he would have to explain to the owners why there was no bat to show for the voyage.
