Batman comic panels across a full sleeve

Other · Colour · Photo

A full sleeve made of comic book panels in a Batman theme, with a blue Batmobile, a green villain, and sound effects such as BAM, POW and KA-POW. The linework is bold and inked with flat, saturated colour in blue, red, orange, yellow and green, with white panel borders. The panels are angled and overlapped across the limb, and the image shows the sleeve from three viewpoints on a black background.

The snow shut the Coldharbour road by four, and by seven the snug was crowded with people who had never meant to stay the night. Dennis from the haulage firm had left a cardboard box behind the bar that morning, swearing he would collect it in spring. Inside were comics swollen with damp, their covers gone soft as bread, and I was the only one with the patience to sort through them.

The Hendry boy, seven and wedged under the settle with a torch, wanted the one with the blue car on the front. I found it near the bottom, the corner torn, a masked man crouched on a rooftop while a green fellow in a question-marked suit grinned from the next panel like he had paid for the printing himself. The boy traced the car with his finger and asked whether it could drive on snow. I said it could drive on anything in those pictures, which seemed to satisfy him.

At half nine the lights went. In the dark I read the captions aloud, because the torch was running low and nobody could see the pages. When I reached the big yellow burst I said it, BAM, and from under the settle came a small voice shouting POW, then, with real feeling, KA-POW. The whole room laughed, even the man who had spent an hour crying about his van in the car park.

The plough came through at seven, and the boy took the comic home in his coat. The rest are still pinned behind my bar, and when the snow comes I read them to whoever is stuck. People always ask which of them won. I tell them the blue car got away every time, and the green one always came back for the last page.
