Batman logo with villain motifs on back
Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo
A large back tattoo shows a Batman figure inside a bat-shaped emblem, surrounded by villain motifs including a green top hat, a green question mark coin, a split-face coin, a playing card, a sword and a diamond shape. The Batman figure and most of the emblem are rendered in black and grey with smooth shading and fine highlights, while the hat, question mark and card add green and red accents. The design fills the upper back and is centred on the spine.

The lift in Coldharbour House had been stuck between the eleventh and twelfth floors since nine, and Owen Baptiste had spent twenty minutes talking to the tenant inside it. Mrs Achebe-Lowe was not frightened, she said, only furious, and she wanted to know why the council kept a man with a torch on nights when he could not mend a pulley.

He passed a bottle of water through the gap in the doors and told her about the ledger he had found in the plant room that afternoon. It was a maintenance book from 1971, the pages gone soft as cloth, and every fault in the building had a tiny drawing beside it in green ink: a top hat, a coin with a question mark stamped on it, a coin split down the middle, a playing card with a crown in the corner, a sword, a diamond. He had assumed a bored apprentice had doodled through the winters. Then he saw that the drawings matched the faults, and that the hat had been drawn beside the boiler that failed in 1979, the same week the caretaker vanished.
"And the lift?" she asked.
He turned to the last page. A bat sat over the entry, its wings spread wider than the paper, and under it someone had written in pencil: Motor room. Mind the rope.
The motor room smelled of hot dust. Owen found the frayed cable exactly where the bat's left wing pointed, a single strand gone bright as wire. He wrapped it, eased the brake release, and the car dropped two inches, then steadied. The doors juddered open on the twelfth floor. Mrs Achebe-Lowe stepped out, straightened her coat and looked back at the empty shaft. "Who did you say left that book?" she asked. Owen shut the ledger and didn't answer.
