Baymax with ba la la text on a lower leg
Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A simple black outline drawing of the cartoon robot Baymax, standing with one arm raised and a small frowning expression. The words BA LA LA LA LA are written in loose, uneven lettering above the figure. The linework is uniform and unshaded on pale skin, with the lower leg and a patch of studio background visible around it.

Mrs Pauline Heskett had patched punctures in lilos and paddling pools for thirty years, and she knew a sulking balloon when she saw one. The thing on her bench at the back of Marlow's Amusements was white, shaped like a dropped marshmallow, and it had a face that looked permanently disappointed in the weather. Someone had left it there with a note reading DO NOT PUT IN WATER, which was the only instruction anyone seemed to follow.

It was her nephew Tomas who first heard it humming. He was nineteen, sunburnt, and on the summer shift at the rides, and he swore the robot sang when nobody was watching. Two notes, then a rattle of syllables, ba la la la la, like a man trying to remember a hymn he'd never learnt. Pauline told him to stop daft talk and get back to the dodgems.
She found the valve on a Thursday, under the crooked arm that had been raised in greeting since 1962 and never once lowered. She pressed her thumb to the seam and the humming came up through her palm, quiet and absurd. The frown was only a fold in the vinyl, she decided. Things sag when they are left on their backs too long.
She patched the hole, blew the figure up until its arm lifted high, and carried it out to the front where the sea was grey and the gulls were arguing. Tomas followed with the pump. When she let go, it bobbed upright on the promenade and waved at the water as if it had just remembered an appointment, and Pauline, who had never once in her life sung in public, found herself humming back.
