Cat holding a wine glass on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A seated cat in a simple outline drawing holds a wine glass with a dark fill in its raised paw. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is black against the skin. The tattoo sits on the ankle, with a rolled denim trouser hem above and a grey sock below, on a silver quilted surface.

Nobody in Harrow Cross could say how the cat had got into the cellar of the Plough, only that by the first frost it had claimed the bottom step as its own and would not be moved. Its one vice was the wine. Every evening at closing it padded up the cellar stairs, took a glass from the rack with one careful paw, and carried it back down without spilling a drop. Nobody saw it done twice. Old Tom Dimmock swore it had been drinking the vicar's communion port, and the vicar, who had been fond of the port himself, did not dispute it.

The spring the vineyard on the hill failed, the village grew sour and quiet. Men stopped coming in. Mrs Pargeter began to count the bottles aloud. One night she came down with a lamp and found the cat seated on the bottom step, a single glass of the last red poured and set before it on the flagstones, untouched, though the cat regarded it with terrible seriousness.

She sat down beside it. "Well," she said, "you've outlasted the lot of us." The cat lifted the glass and drank, slowly, and for the first time in four winters, Mrs Pargeter laughed.
