Cartoon pug in orange glasses
Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo
A seated cartoon pug wearing square orange-framed glasses, with two small orange hearts floating beside its head. The pug is outlined in thin black linework with light grey shading on the face, ears and paws, and the glasses and hearts are filled in orange. The design sits on a plain background of pale skin, with the pug facing forward and centred.

The ledger said the Pryce & Daughters Travelling Circus owed the council four hundred and twelve pounds, and Nell Garrity had been reading the figures aloud to Mortimer for an hour because he liked the way they sounded in the damp. He sat on a folded tarpaulin in the back of the wagon, wearing the orange spectacles she had bought from a jumble stall in Hereford. She said a dog who could count deserved to see the numbers. Rain ticked on the canvas above them like someone impatient to be let in.

Alfie Pryce came in stamping mud off his good boots, carrying a tin of shortbread and a plan. The vicar at Market Dunmore had promised them a field for the summer if they would do a show for the church roof fund. Nell asked whether the field was the one that flooded. Alfie said the field was a state of mind. Mortimer sneezed, which everyone agreed was a vote.
The show that night had eleven people in the stand and a bored heron on the far fence. Mortimer did what he had always done since the lions were sold: he sat very still on the painted pedestal and looked at the crowd over the top of his glasses, as if he had been expecting them and was only slightly disappointed in their timekeeping. Nobody clapped. Then a girl of about seven, wearing wellingtons on the wrong feet, stood up and said, loudly, that he was reading them. The whole stand laughed, and Mortimer's tail gave one slow, serious wag.
Afterwards Nell tallied the hat. Eleven pennies, a button, and a folded drawing of a pug with hearts floating round its head. In the ledger she wrote the takings in the usual column, then, in the margin where no auditor would look, she added one more line: one girl, looked at properly.
