Totoro outline on a shoulder blade
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black outline tattoo of the forest spirit Totoro, shown with its ears, round eyes, belly and whiskers, and holding a leaf or stem that curls up over the shoulder. The linework is even and single weight, with no shading or fill. The tattoo is in black ink only against pale skin, with the composition centred on the upper back.

Dear Tom,

The lock at Hythe Wharf has been silting again, so I've had the paddles up since six and my arms feel like wet rope. Dad would have laughed at me. Yesterday, though, something turned up on the towpath that made the whole mess worth it. A grey, round thing, taller than the nettles, sitting under the alder with its ears folded like a dropped hat. It had a stalk over one shoulder with a leaf on the end as big as a tea tray, and when the rain came it lifted that leaf over its head and sat there quite content while the water ran off the edge.
I didn't tell anyone at the pub. Mrs Okafor from the next boat said I'd been at the gin again. But I left bread crusts in the hollow of the willow at dusk, and this morning they were gone, and in their place sat a single acorn, polished like a bead.
I know what you'll say, that it was a badger or the Harcourt boy playing a trick. Maybe. Still, the boat rocks a little less when I think of it watching from the bank. Come home by Saturday if you can. Bring the good rope, and I'll show you where it sleeps.
Love, Nell
