A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The droid came ashore in a crate of mislabelled fishing floats, tipped out onto the slipway below the chapel like a bad egg, dome first. Nobody on Scarra had seen anything like it, but by teatime Ailsa Brodie, who runs the post office and owns the only sewing machine within forty miles, had decided it needed ears.

I told her it was a navigation unit off a grain freighter, and that its dome was meant to turn towards the sea. She said that was a fine story for a man who'd spent three weeks getting nothing out of it but a single amber light. Then she cut two ears from a tartan tea-towel, stiffened them with glue and sewed them on, and pinned a red satin bow to the top of the dome. The bow was the size of a gull's wing. After that the thing turned towards the post office every morning and never towards the water at all.

The freighter's company wrote in April. A man signing himself Compliance wanted the unit back under a clause I didn't understand, and Ailsa read the letter aloud at the harbour wall with her hands on her hips. We argued until the mail boat hove into view. The droid, which had been sitting on the step with its bow fluttering, rolled down the slipway, stopped at the edge and gave three bright notes, one for each crew member who waved at it from the rail.

I wrote back to Compliance that the unit had been lost at sea, which was nearly true, and that the island had taken it in. Ailsa keeps it now beside the stamps. When the ferry comes in, it still turns its head to face the water, but only long enough to check the bow is straight.
