Infinity quote lettering design on paper
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
Handwritten lettering in black ink on pale paper forms a figure of eight, or infinity symbol, with mixed capitals and cursive words. The loop reads as a looped phrase, with the lower line in capitals and the upper in joined script. The photograph is taken straight on with soft, even light and a slight crease across the paper.

Our Dai never wrote a letter in his life, so when the envelope came up from the colliery office with his name in pencil, Mam set it on the mantel and left it there two days. It was me who finally slit it open with the bread knife. Inside was a single sheet folded in four, and across it, in the careful hand he'd learned at Sunday school, he'd tried to draw a figure of eight with words running round the loop. Under it he'd written only: Read it out loud, Bethan.

I read it out loud. Live the life you love, love the life you live. I said it twice and it sounded like something off a tea towel, and I told him so when he came in black to the eyebrows at six. He just laughed and washed at the sink with the bar of carbolic, the water going grey. He said old Tommy Rees had told him that on the cage going down, the summer the roof fell in at number four. Tommy said a loop has no end, so you never get to the bit where you stop caring. Dad thought that was daft and kept it anyway, the way he kept his lamp tin polished.
The night before he sailed for Canada with the Hendersons, the one thing he never said was that he'd stayed behind the first time for me. I went down to the lamp room in my coat, past the hooks with the brass tallies, and found the same loop chalked on the slate by the door. Someone had rubbed half of it away. I put my thumb on the curve where the two halves met and drew it round again, slowly, until the chalk came off grey on my skin and I could feel the cold of the stone under it.
