Mrs Abigail Oakes had sold seeds from the same barrow outside Doncaster market for thirty-one years, and in all that time nobody had ever asked her for a packet that matched the one beside it. Then the young lad from the glassworks came, pale from the furnace, and asked for something that would grow in the soot on the wall behind the coal yard. Nobody grew anything there. She gave him a twist of paper with grey specks inside and told him to plant it in the shade and forget it. He came back in March wanting his money back, because the thing had flowered into a heap of dark curls like a storm cloud, and his mother would not have it in the yard.

Oakes walked down to see it herself. The bloom spilled over the brick like a cloud that had decided to stay low, every petal stippled with black dots that caught the light the way frost does. Dark leaves stood out at the top and bottom like cut paper. Someone had scratched words into the mortar beneath it in a loopy hand, and the rain had made them run. Be Different, it said, and she laughed until she had to sit down on her barrow.
