Breathe hand lettering design
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows the word Breathe drawn in dark ink in a flowing, brush-style script on a cream background. The letters have thick and thin strokes, with a swash underline beneath the word. A yellow marker pen with a black tip lies diagonally at the lower right, and the lighting is soft and even.

You have been lettering the king's proclamations for eleven winters in Hollin Reach, where the ink thickens in the pots if the shutters are left open. Today the steward climbs your stairs without knocking, unrolls a scroll and points at a single word the council has chosen for the great gate: BREATHE. "Not carve it," he says. "Breathe it."

You laugh, then stop, because he is not joking. The kingdom has spent a year holding its breath since the mill fires, he tells you, and the council wants travellers to let theirs out the moment they pass under the arch. You thin the sepia ink with a drop of linseed, load the good sable and begin. The first stroke is a long downward sweep, thick as a thumb at the base and fine as thread at the tail, and you understand that the letters must lean the way a tired man leans when he finally sits down.
It takes three days. On the second night the steward returns with a lamp and watches you finish the swash beneath the word, a flick that rises and then drops away like a sigh. He asks what the yellow pen on your bench is for. You tell him it belongs to the apprentices, who must learn the line on paper before they are trusted with the brush. He nods slowly, as if this is a lesson about the kingdom too.
On the morning the gate is hung, word comes that the mills are turning again. You walk down to see the lettering in full daylight and find the crowd gone quiet, every face tipped upward to read it. Nobody speaks. A child at the front lets out a long, unsteady breath, and when you look down you find you have been holding yours too.
