The generator coughs twice before it catches, and by then the Wheel of Fortune is already lit against the dark field behind the lay-by. You have been awake since five, counting cash into biscuit tins, and Mrs Okafor from the candy floss van is leaning on your hatch asking whether the rain will hold. You tell her it will not. She laughs as if you have made a joke.

Your father used to say the trick to running a fair was to write everything down on one side of a card and nothing on the other. Ride times, the price of a tombola ticket, the names of the lads who came for a week and left after one wet Tuesday. The card in your pocket now is the last one he wrote, folded soft as cloth. It has only three lines on it, sloped and looping like a man who never once lifted his pen: keep, life, simple.
You argued with him about that card for most of a summer. You wanted a bigger life, a flat with a sink that did not drip, a season that ended somewhere with a sea view. He only tapped the paper and shrugged, and you thought he meant nothing by it.
Now the last rides are fastened down and the lorry ramp is up. You stand in the empty car park with the card open under the lamp and read it again. Somewhere behind you a single bulb is still swinging on the Waltzer, lighting nothing at all. You switch it off, and the field goes dark, and for once you do not reach for anything else.
