The last tent of the Gavrilov Brothers Travelling Circus had holes in its canvas the size of dinner plates, and the rain came through them onto the sawdust in a steady patter. The ringmaster had gone off in March with the takings and the good horse. The clowns had taken work at a seaside pier. What remained was a painted wagon, a lion that slept most of the day, and a girl who had decided she would perform the high trapeze on Saturday, in front of whoever came, even if that was only the milk seller and his dog. Piet had told her no. Then he had told her maybe. Then he had gone quiet, because she had looked at him the way his own daughter used to, before she married a man in Hull and never wrote.
On the Friday night she came down the rope, dropped to the sawdust, and wiped her palms on her skirt. She asked him what the word was that his mother used to say to him at the bottom of every hard thing. He told her it was a short word, in the old language, and that he had never once said it aloud in English. She made him say it anyway. So he did, and she laughed, and climbed back up.
On Saturday the milk seller came, and brought four friends, and a woman with a pram. Mira swung out over them with her hands open and her chin up, and when she caught the bar and hung there, grinning, Piet stood, his knees complaining, and shouted the word so loudly the lion woke.
