Be still script on the inner forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a small black script tattoo reading be still on the inner forearm, running diagonally up from the wrist. The lettering is handwritten in smooth, slightly varied strokes with a fine, even line weight. The ink is solid black on a light skin tone, set against dark green foliage and a grey sleeve at the edge of the frame.

Dear Nell,

The heron came back to the pond again this morning, the one with the bent left leg. I watched it from the kitchen window for nearly an hour before I remembered the kettle. It never moved once. Your grandad used to say that was the whole trick of it: be still, and the world comes to you. He said it about pond fish, about bees, and about me when I was trying to get the lid off a jar.
I've been clearing the bed under the damson tree, the one you helped plant the summer you were eight and furious about wellies. The soil there is finally crumbling the way it should. I found a clay pipe stem and a button with a ship on it, which I have put on the windowsill for you to claim when you visit. I am not going to tell you what I think about the flat in Leeds. You've had enough of that from your mother.
Come at the weekend if you can. Bring the library book you never finished. We'll sit on the bench together and not say anything for a while, and the heron might come back to see what we're up to. Love, Gran.
