Two cartoon cats on a wrist
Fine line · Other · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows two simple cartoon cats sitting side by side, drawn with thin reddish-brown outlines and faces with dot eyes and whiskers. The left cat is filled with a pale grey-blue wash and the right cat with soft peach and orange tones, with the tails curling outward. The small design sits centred on a pale wrist against a green grass background, photographed from above.

Pewter had claimed the cool end of the windowsill in March, and Custard had spent every morning since trying to shove him off it with a well-aimed paw. The sill belonged to Mrs Abernathy's bakery on Coldharbour Lane, where the loaves came out at six and the crusts were thrown out at half past, and a cat who sat in the right spot could expect a heel of sourdough by seven.

The trouble began on the Tuesday the rain came sideways off the moors. The awning had sprung a leak over the far corner, so only one dry patch was left, a hand's width of painted wood. Pewter, who was proud and tidy, refused to sit in the wet. Custard, who was not, refused to move. Mrs Abernathy came out with a tea towel, took one look at the pair of them, and sighed the way she did when the dough wouldn't rise.
They stayed like that all afternoon, shoulder to shoulder on the scrap of dry wood, while the drizzle hissed on the cobbles. Pewter stopped flicking his tail. Custard stopped shedding onto the cushion. By the time the lamps came on, their tails had knotted together in the middle, one the colour of cold dishwater and one the colour of toast, and neither of them could be bothered to untangle them.
Mrs Abernathy left out two heels that night instead of one. The bell over the door rang, the rain kept falling, and nobody on Coldharbour Lane ever saw the cats sit anywhere else.
