Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows a lettering design with the words Be Stronger on the first line, a small swash flourish in the middle, and than your Excuses on the third line. The letters are drawn in a flowing black script with thick and thin strokes and a few looping connecting lines. It is a black ink design on plain white with no shading or colour, and the text is centred on the page.

Ward 9 went quiet at ten past three, and that is always when my excuses turn up, lined up like visitors who have come too early. The bleep system was down again. My feet hurt. Mr Okafor's daughter still hadn't rung back about his discharge. I had a reason ready for every hour left until seven.

Above the drug trolley, Sister Adeyemi had taped a strip of card cut from a biscuit tin, the words written in a flowing black hand: Be stronger than your excuses. She said she wrote it for herself, which I never believed, because she never seemed to need reminding of anything. I read it every time I reached for the trolley key and then walked past it anyway.
At half three, Mr Halloran in bay four pressed his call button and asked, very politely, whether I had a pen that worked. He wanted to write to his wife, who had died in March. His hand shook so badly the first word came out as a scribble. I pulled the chair close, sat on the edge of the bed, and held the paper flat on his knee while he worked through the letter one careful line at a time. It took forty minutes. Nothing about it was clever or heroic. I just stayed.
When he finally signed it, he handed me the pen and asked me to fold the page into an envelope, because his fingers wouldn't manage it. Afterwards I went back to the trolley and straightened the card above it, which had slipped sideways, and found I had no excuses left for the hour that remained.
