Be thankful lettering with vines and branch

Lettering · Mixed · Flash

The design shows the words Be thankful in flowing black script, with a leafy vine curling at each side and a bare branch with three acorns across the bottom. The reference Colossians 3:15 sits in small capitals beneath the branch. The linework is fine and even, with pale yellow-green leaves and a soft pink tint on the branch, and the composition is centred on a plain white background.

Snow had not yet come to Hollin Gap, though the bracken had turned the colour of rust and the wind carried the smell of wet stone up from the valley. Marjorie Pell had walked the goat track over the pass every October for forty years, and every October she stopped at the same stunted oak, where one bare branch reached out over the drop like an arm held out for change.

This year the branch had nothing on it but three acorns, hard and green-brown, hanging from a twig no thicker than a bootlace. Her grandson Idris walked behind her with the cart, complaining about the cold in his hands. "We'll be late for the market," he said. She told him the market would wait. It had waited for her husband's father, and for his father before him, and it could wait for a boy who could not sit still for the length of a grace.

She reached up and broke the twig slowly, the way her mother had taught her to take cuttings without tearing the bark. Then she pressed the acorns into his palm, one, two, three. "For the ledger," she said. "Write down what you were given today before you write down what it cost." He frowned at them. They were only acorns, and he was fifteen and sure of everything.

Lower down, on the far side of the pass, the sun broke through the cloud and lit the whole valley copper: the roofs, the river, the new wall around the orchard. Idris put the acorns in his coat pocket and said nothing, which for him was a kind of thank you. Marjorie took the reins and started down.
