It is well with my soul lettering with leafy vines
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A black ink design drawing of the phrase It is well with my soul, set in flowing hand-lettered script with the word soul in a large looping capital style. Two thin botanical sprigs with small leaves and dot-tipped stems frame the lettering on the left and lower right. The image is drawn in solid black on a plain white background with a centred, balanced composition.

The ink ran thin again this morning, so I thinned it with rainwater, which Master Corvel says is a sin against the guild, and the strokes came out fatter than I wanted. You will laugh at me, Pell, but I have spent three evenings on the long loop of the S alone. The Steward wants the words over the almshouse door in Vellan, and he wants them to rise above everything else like a heron over reeds.

The mason wanted to carve them and the Steward wanted gold leaf, but I asked for a reed pen and a plain sheet, so the leaves could look as though they had grown up beside the words without anyone planting them. I drew the two sprigs first, one curling up the left margin and one trailing down the right, with little dots at the stem tips where the ink pooled and I was too impatient to wipe it away.
Yesterday an old woman from the river quarter stopped to watch me work. She leaned on her crutch and read the phrase slowly, moving her lips, and then she asked me to write it small enough to fit inside a locket. She said it was the sort of thing a person needs to be able to hold without it being shouted at them. I told her I could manage that, and she paid me in two pears and a promise to come back for the finished copy.
I have pinned my practice sheet above the bench, and the S is lopsided, the tail of the l too eager. Corvel says a hand that is perfect is a hand that has stopped learning. I think I shall leave it as it is.
