A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the fourth week out of Falmouth the fresh water was down to a pint a man, and Samuel Pryce had stopped counting the nails in the hold because counting made his hands shake. Instead he worked on the spare oar, curling each loop of the word the way his mother had taught him at the kitchen table, with a stub of charcoal and the lamp turned low.

The oar was for Tobias Wren, a boy from Mevagissey who had come aboard to pay off his father's debts and had never once been told what the money bought. Pryce did not know whether the boy could read. He painted the small capitals first, then the long looping word that needed the most room, and left the last word for the morning, when his hand would be steadier.

On the thirty-first day a squall took the mainsail's head and the ship lay over until the starboard rail went under. Wren went over with the sheet line, and Pryce went after him with nothing but the oar. They came up together, the boy coughing, the painted wood between them turned toward the grey sky. When the mate hauled them in, the first thing he read aloud was the word in the middle, and nobody on deck remarked on the spelling.

Pryce sat on the wet planks with his back against the capstan and found he was saying the last word under his breath, over and over, the way a man hangs on to a rope until someone else takes the weight. Me, me, me. The lamp guttered out, and he let it.
