Bear, cabin and trees on an upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows an orange bear walking in front of a cluster of green, bare-branched trees, with a wooden cabin and a dark smoking chimney above. Teal and grey triangles and small red dots fill the space around the bear and trees. The linework is bold and dark, with flat fills and soft shading on the bear's fur and the leaves, and the design is arranged in a rounded shape across the upper arm.

You have the dough proving under a damp cloth and the oven already ticking up to heat when the bear's shadow crosses the yard gate, long before the shutters go up on Harrow Lane. Its breath fogs the cold glass of the back door. You do not reach for the poker. Your grandmother kept a rule about the hill bear, and you have never once broken it: the first loaf out of the oven goes on the step.

So you shape it, scoring the top with three quick cuts the way she taught you, and carry it out in your apron while the bakehouse chimney coughs its grey plume into the bare branches. The bear sits back on its haunches and waits, orange as a well-baked crust, its teal-tinged shadow stretching across the frost. It takes the loaf with surprising care, the way a clerk takes a ticket, and does not look back at you.
The next morning there is a jar on the step: honey dark as strong tea, and a pinecone wrapped in brown paper with your name on it in square capitals. Mrs Pask at the post office says the bear has walked that road since before the war, and that the cabin on the ridge belonged to a woodcutter who never came down. You stopped asking which of them was keeping the other company.
Now at four each morning you lift the first loaf from the tin, crack the crust so it steams, and wait by the door. Frost on the sill catches the lamp in small pale triangles. Somewhere up the hill a chimney is smoking, and you know exactly who is lighting it.
