Infinity symbol with paper plane on ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of an infinity symbol sits on the side of a foot near the ankle. The left loop holds a paper plane drawn in outline, with its lower section shaded in stippled texture, while the right loop is traced with a dashed line. The linework is clean and simple, set against pale skin on a plain background.

The night porter at Calder Ward swore that the paper plane came down the corridor on its own, the way the lift did after midnight. It was folded from the back of a drinks trolley order, creased sharp along the wings, and it flew low over the beds where the lamps were kept dim.

Sister Agnes Holm watched it land at the nurses' station every night for a month. Each time the plane had been written on in pencil, a few words, always the same kind of thing: the name of a boy in bed six, a number, a word like 'sleeping'. She pinned them to the board. The boy in bed six was the one who had stopped asking for his mother, and nobody could say who had been folding paper for him.
On the last night of her shift she followed the plane to the end of the east wing, where the corridor curved back on itself and a strip light buzzed on a loop nobody had ever fixed. The plane went round twice, dipping through the dark, then slid under the fire door and was gone. Behind the door there was only a linen cupboard and a stack of folded blankets, one of them warm to the touch.
She wrote nothing on the board that morning. Instead she folded a fresh plane from the back of her own handover sheet, traced a dashed line in the air above the station, and let it go towards the loop. It came back before dawn with a single word in a hand she did not know: 'landed'.
