Bear paw print with claw marks on a calf
Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A bear paw print sits on the front of a lower leg, with five toe pads and a large main pad. Claw marks run across the top of the design, and the shading makes the skin look cracked and gouged. The image is mostly brown and grey tones with no bright colour, and the tattoo fills most of the frame against a blue wall and wooden floor.

You will not believe what came down to the sawmill on Tuesday. Mr Okonedo's boy found the track first, a paw print the size of a dinner plate pressed into the mud by the log chute, five toe pads and that great heel behind them. The mud had frozen so hard overnight that every crack in it was sharp. Beside it, four long gouges had been scored down the side of the cedar, fresh and pale as peeled apples.
The men have talked of nothing else since. Walt Hennessy set two traps by the creek and sat up three nights with his rifle across his knees, and I will admit I did not sleep well either, listening to the wind worry at the shutters. Nobody saw the animal. Nobody heard it. The only proof was the prints, which kept coming, always the same size, always the same direction, down from the ridge toward the town.
Then on Friday the prints stopped at the edge of the rail yard, and by morning there were none on the far side, only fresh gouges on the depot door. Walt went out with a lantern and came back with his face gone grey. He told the foreman he had followed the trail to where it ended and found the bear's own tracks walking away from that spot, backwards, into the trees. He said he did not want to know what that meant. I think he knows exactly what it means and cannot bring himself to say it.
Write soon and tell me Leeds is not as cold as this. Your loving sister, Ada
