The snow had reached the second cairn by the time the bear stepped out from the spruce, and Teodor, who had promised his mother he would never turn back on the Kessler pass, set down the sledge rope and waited for the animal to decide what it wanted.

It was larger than any bear he had seen in the valley. Pines stood up along its spine in dense rows, their tips brushing the line of its shoulders, and a grey ridge of rock ran across its back where a bear's hump should be. Above its haunch hung a thin crescent moon, pale as a fingernail. Trailing from its forepaws was a loop of vine with small white flowers and leaves that caught the last of the light, as though the ground had not quite agreed to let it go.

The bear lowered its head and turned towards the gully that the post riders had abandoned after the rockfall. Teodor knew the track was closed. He followed anyway, because the letters in his satchel were for families who had been waiting since autumn, and because the bear's steps left prints that filled slowly with the snow behind them, the way a rumour fills a village. Branches bent aside as they passed. A stream ran uphill for a while, then remembered itself and went down.

At the saddle the bear stopped and shook itself once. The forest slid off its flanks in a soft rush of needles and settled onto the far slope as ordinary trees, tall and dark and unremarkable. The moon dropped from the air into Teodor's open palm, cold and light. He carried it down to the valley with the letters, and when he delivered the last one, to a widow in Brenner Hollow, she took it from him without asking what it was.
