Beautiful script lettering on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of an inner wrist showing the word Beautiful in black, cursive script lettering. The thin, looping linework is filled with solid black ink and has soft grey shading in places. A silver wristwatch with a metal bracelet sits above the tattoo, and the word runs horizontally across the wrist against a pale skin background.

Old Tomas Ferrier had painted the names on every boat in Skerrow harbour for forty years. When the herring fleet came in he sat on an upturned creel with his brushes wrapped in oilcloth and waited for the women to bring him their words. Most wanted a name. Some wanted a prayer. Only one ever asked for a single word, and she wrote it out for him on the back of a ration card in her careful schoolroom hand.

The word was Beautiful. Tomas had never lettered a word that long without a name to hold it, and he said so. Morag Dunn told him the boat had no name and would be sold to the mainland in the spring, and that whoever bought her should see the word first thing each morning when they climbed aboard. So he painted it in looping black script, the B swelling like a wave, the tails of the letters curling back on themselves so the eye could never quite settle. He filled every loop solid with ink, then shaded the hollows grey so it looked as though the letters had sunk into the wood.
The boat went south with the word on her bow. Thirty years later a man from Oban came up the harbour road asking after the painter. He had bought the boat for scrap and found the letters still there under the salt and the flaking blue, and he had kept her because he could not bring himself to paint over them. Tomas was long dead by then. His grandson was taken to the wall where the brushes still hung, and shown the ledger, and the line in the old man's crooked hand that read only: Beautiful. For Morag. Paid in full.
