Beauty and the Beast stained glass forearm tattoo

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A colour tattoo on the inner forearm shows two characters dancing inside an oval frame styled like stained glass, with a red rose at the top. The figures are outlined in bold black lines and filled with blue, yellow and warm tones, while the lower section has a grey and brown hand holding a grey object beneath dark red leaves. The composition is centred and vertical, with the frame filling most of the arm and the rest of the body out of shot.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Oona Vell had been lead-gluing the same cracked panel for three days when the ship's chandler came down to the glass shop to ask why the job was taking so long. She told him the rose was the trouble. Someone had set it in blue glass a century ago, and the blue had gone grey under the old sun lamps, so every petal she cut came out wrong.

The panel showed two figures turning in a hall with a lamp burning low on the wall. The man wore a coat the colour of deep water and had a face like a shut door. The woman's skirt was yellow as lemon peel, and she held her head up as if the room had been built for her to look down on. Oona had never seen anyone dance like that. Her own mother had danced in the port bars with a rope seller, and it had ended with a bruise and a borrowed song.

On the fourth morning she found a bent grey rod of old lead tucked in the frame, and folded inside it a note in the chandler's cramped hand. The hall was leaving orbit. If the window was not finished by the next shift, it would go to a collector on Ceres. Oona sat with the rose until the light came through the dome at the right angle, then cut one petal from ruby glass and set it into the lead.

When the panel went up in the lounge, the dancers began to turn slowly as the station rotated, and the rose caught the sun last of all. The chandler asked whether she would charge him for the leaves. She said the leaves were the easy part.
