Beauty from ashes script lettering design
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows the phrase beauty from ashes written in flowing, brush-style script on a plain white background, with the word FROM in small upper-case letters between the two lines. The linework is black and varies in thickness, with thicker strokes on the downstrokes and fine hairline tails on the joins and flourishes. It is a flat, untextured drawing with no shading, body or colour, presented as a standalone design.

The brush is still the good sable one, the one your mother wrapped in waxed paper before the Glasshouse fire, and you have spent three days deciding whether the sign on the gate of Harrow Lane can be saved. Half the enamel has crazed, and the letters that survived are the wrong way round, a backwards B and a J that has lost its hook. Nobody in the settlement can read the old script any more, so they ask you to copy it from the ledger scraps you carried out of the archive.

The ash has settled on everything, grey fur on the sills, and the children have started calling it snow. You mix your black from soot and linseed, the way the old sign-writers did, and practise the loops on a slate until your wrist aches. The word you are copying is beauty, and you cannot write it without wondering why the people who made this place wanted it painted on a gate at all.
On the sixth morning the ledger falls open to the phrase itself, written in a hand that leans as if into wind. Someone has pencilled a smaller word between the two lines, FROM, the capitals pressed so hard the graphite shines. You trace it with your thumb and realise the phrase was never a boast. It is a note to whoever came after the fire, telling them the burned ones were never the whole story.
You rehang the gate with the new letters still wet. The first rain in a year runs down the thick downstrokes and pools in the hairline tails, and by evening the whole thing reads clearly from the road. A girl with a bucket stops, sounds it out slowly, and asks what it means. You wipe the brush on your apron and tell her it means exactly what it says.
