Beer barrel, hops and wheat on upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A wooden barrel filled with a pale brown liquid holds a wooden paddle, flanked by a glass of beer with foam, green hop cones and wheat stalks. Bold dark outlines define the shapes, with smooth colour fills in browns, greens, yellow and red, and small highlights on the glass and barrel hoops. The design fills the curve of the upper arm, with hop leaves and scattered grains along the bottom edge.

The mash had been turning since first light when Ada Pell came down the lane with a sack of wheat on her hip and found the brewhouse door already open. Her father had died in March. Nobody in Hollin Bridge had brewed since, for the barrel was his and the paddle was his, and the village had agreed, in the way villages do, that such things were not for borrowing.

Inside, the oak tub was full to its hoops with a pale brown wort that smelt of bread and cut grass. The paddle stood in it upright, its handle still dark from his hands. Ada knew who had opened the door. Old Mrs Gedge kept the hops in her cold cellar and had never once in forty years asked for thanks. Ada tipped the wheat in, tied back her hair and stirred until the sun cleared the chapel roof, then stirred until it went down behind the hill where the hop bines climbed the fence.
By the second week the men who had stood in the road with their arms folded came round to the brewhouse with jugs. They did not say much. The beer was thin at first and then not thin, sharp on the tongue and sweet at the back, the way he had always made it. Ada filled their jugs and kept the paddle moving.
On the last evening of the month she poured one glass more than the men had asked for, set it on the bench beside his chair, and watched the foam slide down the side and settle. Nobody drank it. In the morning the glass was empty and the paddle lay across the rim of the barrel, dry at one end and wet at the other, as if someone had been stirring in the night and had only just stopped.
