Teacup and saucer on a wrist

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A teacup sits on a saucer with a tea bag string hanging over the side, and grey steam curls upwards from the cup. Yellow flowers and green leaves frame the design on both sides. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with flat colour fills in teal, pink, yellow and green on a light skin tone.

Dear Maureen, The urn in the Year Nine staffroom finally gave up on Tuesday, which I'm told is the most dramatic thing to happen at Hollinside since the fire drill of 1996. Mr Pell still insists on tea strong enough to stand a spoon in, so I've been brewing it in the good cups from the top cupboard, the ones with the pink rims nobody was ever allowed to touch.

The reunion was on Saturday. Forty-one of us turned up in the sports hall with name badges we had to peel off our coats afterwards. Gail Robins had brought a flask, and she poured each of us a cup into the chipped saucers she'd nicked from home economics in 1987. We all went quiet, because the tea was still steaming after three hours and nobody could explain it. Gail said her mum always left the string hanging over the side, the way she did in the kitchen above the chip shop, and that the steam was the bit you couldn't buy.

I didn't tell her that the steam was the reason I'd come at all, or that I'd stood by the trestle tables waiting for someone to ask where I'd been all these years. Nobody asked. Mr Pell asked me to pass the sugar, and that was enough.

I've kept the saucer. It's on my windowsill with a bag of Assam still in it, going dry. Come up at Easter and we'll make a proper pot, and you can tell me about the teacher who wore the green coat, and I'll pretend I've forgotten the rest. Love, Jan.
