Matching infinity heart tattoos on wrists

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two near-identical tattoos of an interlocking infinity loop shaped into a heart sit on the inner wrists of two people. The outlines are bold and the interior bands are shaded with grey, giving the knot a raised, ribbon-like look. The two designs are photographed side by side against plain skin tones with soft, even lighting.

You have the first tray of twists on the bench before the bin lorry reaches the end of the road, and the ovens are already ticking as they warm. Marisol's hands are quicker than yours at this hour, so you let her roll the ropes while you cut the dough into strips no wider than a finger. Each strip is laid down, folded over itself and threaded through the next, until the thing on the tray is a knot with no beginning or end. Your grandmother called it the endless bun. Nobody in the shop calls it anything but the heart, because that is what it becomes once the glaze goes on and the lamp catches the ridges.

The argument started over the glaze. Marisol wanted it thin and clear, the way her mother made it in Lisbon, but you had the old recipe in the biscuit tin, pencilled in your grandmother's hand, and it said egg wash and a pinch of salt. You didn't win. Neither did she. You made two trays, one each, and set them side by side on the cooling rack where the first grey light was creeping through the back window, and for a while neither of you spoke.

At six the shutter rattled up and Mr Okafor came in wearing his paint-spattered coat, asking for his usual. He tapped the glass over the clear-glazed ones, then the other tray, and said the second kind tasted of home. It was the only verdict either of you had wanted all morning. Marisol laughed and nudged the tray towards him with a floury knuckle, and you watched the knot shine under the lamp.

Afterwards, sweeping flour off the step, you found she had left one loop of dough on the bench, rolled tight and pinched shut at the ends. You pressed the seam together with your thumb until it held, then set it on the sill in the sun to see if it would rise.
