Believe in yourself a little more script

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A handwritten script phrase reads Believe in yourself a little more, with the words stacked across the page in a slanted, looping hand. A small heart sits beneath the final word. The linework is a single black line of even weight on a cream, softly shaded background, with no shading or colour within the design.

The pencil had been chewed flat, which told you the notebook belonged to someone who thought hard before writing anything down. You had logged it at quarter past six on Platform Four, the 17:52 to Carlisle still ticking as it cooled beyond the window, and the slip said it should already be on its way to the depot. Instead you sat on the bench by the luggage trolley and turned the cover over again, looking for a name.

There was none. There was only a line on the inside back page, written in a slanted, looping hand that climbed down the margin as though it did not quite trust the stairs: believe in yourself a little more. Beneath the final word a small heart had been pressed hard enough to dent the paper. The rest of the book held train times copied out and crossed through, a sketch of a footbridge, and three addresses, two of them struck out with the same firm pencil.

You had seen that slope of letters before, pinned above the tea urn in the staff room, where the early shift left notes about who had taken the last of the biscuits. Dilys, the driver, had written them all, and when she retired last spring the notes stopped and nobody thought to take them down. You thought of that while the 18:10 pulled in, its doors sighing open, and you stood up with the book in your hand, undecided.

In the end you did not post it. You wrote on the back of the slip, under reason for return, believe in yourself a little more, copying the loops as carefully as you could, and then you drew a heart underneath because the one in the book had been so stubborn. You slid the slip into the cover and left the notebook on the seat by the door, where whoever came back for it would have to look.
