Believe in yourself script on forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo spells out the phrase Believe in Yourself in flowing cursive script across the skin. The words Be and You are in pink-red ink, while lieve, in and rself are in dark grey or black, with the capital B and Y and the letter flourishes drawn with fine, smooth linework. The lettering fills most of the frame against a soft, slightly warm skin tone with a dark vignette around the edges.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mr Hollis had been dead a fortnight when his widow asked me to finish the window at the Corn Exchange. Not Hollis's window, she was clear about that, but the one he had started and never got past. Two words in red, two in black, all of it in the swooping copperplate he'd taught me on a Saturday when I was twelve and too slow to be bothered. I still had his brushes, kept in a tobacco tin that smelled of turpentine.

I told her the paint would have dried into the grain by now, and she said I'd find a way. So I went up the ladder with the cold glass against my cheek and started where he'd stopped, which was the Y. He had drawn its loop so fine you could barely tell the hairline from a crack in the pane.

It took three days. Each evening I walked home past the bakery and the chapel and the Co-op, and each evening the letters sat in the window longer than I did, backwards from the inside, telling the empty street what it could not yet believe about itself.

On the last morning the sun came round low and lit the whole thing from the wrong side, and I could read it perfectly from the pavement. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF, in letters I had not dared to be proud of. Mrs Hollis stood across the road with her coat buttoned to the neck and didn't cross. She just nodded at the glass, once, the way you do when a thing is finished and no longer yours to fix.
