Bicycle in a circle on a lower leg
Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A simple outline of a bicycle with two wheels, handlebars and a seat sits inside a single thin black circle. The linework is clean and even, with no shading, and the design is shown in black ink only. The tattoo is centred on the lower leg against a dark sock and a light, blurred background.

The bike had leaned against the far Bramley since June, its front tyre gone soft, and my uncle Desmond kept promising to mend it before the pickers came. Nobody mended anything at Hollin Farm in August. We were too busy with the drop, the ladders and the wasps that arrived at four o'clock as if they had been paid to.

Every evening I rode it down the track between rows six and nine, standing on the pedals so the basket rattled, carrying crates of Discovery to the cold shed. Desmond said I went round in circles. I told him the orchard was a circle, forty trees set round a well nobody had dug in years, and a circle was the only shape that always got you back to the gate.
On the last Saturday of the season I found the grass under the far tree worn bare in a ring, exactly the width of a tyre, pressed flat by years of someone going round and round. The bike had not been left there by accident. Desmond had been riding it to that tree for as long as I had been alive, and never once said why.
That evening he pumped the tyre up on the back step, sat on the cracked saddle and pedalled slowly round the ring with his hands off the bars. The wasps lifted off the windfalls and followed him. I left the gate open behind us, and for once nobody counted the crates.
