Small bicycle outline on the foot

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small outline tattoo of a bicycle sits on the side of a foot near the ankle. The single black line drawing shows a frame, handlebars, saddle and two wheels, with even, consistent linework. The plain skin around it and the soft lighting keep the focus on the design.

Frank had the bicycle propped against the hall wall before the band finished tuning, its front wheel ticking as it cooled. Outside, the lane was black and the hedges smelled of wet hay. Inside, the floor was already scuffed grey by boots that had come straight from the pit, and the lights swung on their cords every time someone danced too hard.

Mary Lund was late, which she never was. He watched the door between songs, turning his cap in both hands until the brim went soft. When she finally came in, her coat was buttoned wrong and there was a streak of oil on her wrist. She said her brother had taken the bicycle to Whitby on Thursday and not brought it back, so she had walked the last two miles and got a lift from the milk van for the rest.

Frank didn't say anything clever. He took her hand and they danced to a waltz the fiddler played too slowly, and when it ended he walked her out to the wall where his own bicycle leaned. He tapped the saddle. She laughed and said she wasn't riding anywhere in her good shoes. He said he would wheel it, then, and she could sit on the crossbar like a girl in a picture.

They went home down the lane with the lamp swinging from the handlebars, the chain singing a little on every turn. Behind them the hall went on glowing, the fiddle thin across the fields. Halfway down the hill she asked him to stop, and he did, and she kissed him with the bike between them, both wheels still turning slowly in the dark.
