Fine line black tattoo of a stylised bird above the words remember who you are running down a forearm, with a studded bracelet on the wrist.

Bird outline and script on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small outlined bird sits near the wrist-side of the forearm, drawn in a single dark ink with thin, unshaded linework. Beneath it, vertical script reads remember who you are, with a dot before and after the words. The photo is a casual, warmly lit close crop, with the wrist wearing a studded leather bracelet and a chain bracelet, and the face is out of frame.

Dear Maud, the snow has shut the pass since Tuesday, and the innkeeper has given up pretending the road will open before Thursday. I am writing this at the table nearest the fire, because it is the only place the ink does not freeze in the pot.

The landlady's grandson keeps a pigeon loft behind the stables. He is nine and serious about it, and yesterday he brought me a grey hen that had come in from the cold with a ring of red thread on one leg. He said she would carry a message to the valley if I tied one on, so I wrote the only thing I could think of that was true. I told you I would come back before the lambs. I have not kept to that yet, and I do not know whether the hen will reach you before I do.

The boy asked what the words meant. I said they were a promise I had made to myself on the bad night at Corran Ford, when the cart went into the river and I was certain I would not climb out. He looked at the bird, then at me, and said it was a daft thing to write to somebody, because they would know already. I laughed for the first time since the thaw failed.

The hen goes at first light, if the sky clears. The boy has put a scrap of bread in the basket for her and a bit of his own wool for luck. I am keeping the pencil stub he lent me, and I will write again when there is more to say. Tell Father the dog is well, and that I have not forgotten who I am.
