Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A half-sleeve tattoo shown in four side-by-side views of an upper arm and shoulder. Realistic songbirds in flight and perched on branches are surrounded by purple and magenta orchids and pink cherry blossom, with small butterflies scattered among the flowers. The shading is smooth and detailed, and the turquoise background makes the flowers and birds stand out.

The third crate of orchids arrived cracked at the stems, and Mrs Odell was already on the gravel with her clipboard when Thomas hauled it off the cart. The plants lay in wet moss, purple and magenta, their petals bruised at the edges. He had worked at the nursery since the spring frosts long enough to know the glasshouse at Hollin Lane was never quite warm enough for them, and long enough to learn that the thrushes had found the vents.

By June the birds had made the place theirs. A pair of song thrushes nested in the cherry tree beyond the back wall, and they flew in through the propped ventilator to pick at the blossom, scattering pink petals over the potting benches. Thomas swept twice a day. He strung netting across the door, and each morning there was another bird on the wrong side of the glass, beating against it with its wings spread wide. 'They were here before the orchids,' Mrs Odell said, not looking up from her ledger. 'Some things come in whether you invite them or not.'

He ignored her. On the Friday he came in early and found the netting cut clean through, not torn, and the phalaenopsis on the top shelf had opened three new blooms overnight, each dusted yellow at the throat. A cherry petal rested on the lip of every flower. A brown bird sat on the rim of the nearest pot, watching him with one unblinking eye, and beside it a small butterfly opened and closed its wings on a stalk of pale blossom.

He left the vents open after that. By August the glasshouse smelled of rain and sweet rot, and the orchids had climbed their canes higher than anyone thought they could. Thomas stopped counting the birds, and when he locked up at dusk he always left the door on the latch.
