Bison silhouette with night sky and mountains
Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A bison silhouette forms the outline of the tattoo, with its body filled by a black night sky scattered with small white dots for stars and a crescent moon near the head. Two grey, softly shaded mountain peaks sit within the legs and torso, giving depth against the solid black ink. The design is shown in black and grey on a leg, centred in the frame against a dark leather couch.

Tobias had counted the herd three times before he admitted the animals were not sheep. They came down off the dunes at Carrick Point in the grey hour before the lamp was lit, dark shapes with shoulders like upturned boats, and they stood in the shallows as if waiting to be ferried somewhere.

"Keeper's ledger says nothing about buffalo," said Mrs Anand from the cottage step, shaking flour from her apron. She had come up from Dumfries the winter her husband drowned, and she had a way of stating facts that made them sound like weather.
Tobias climbed the one hundred and twelve steps with the oil can and did not look back until he reached the gallery. Below, the great animals had turned their heads toward the tower, slow and unbothered, and he understood they were not looking at the light. They were looking at the sky above it, where the first stars pricked through and a thin paring of moon hung low over the headland like a scythe somebody had forgotten to hang up.
He trimmed the wick, turned the mantle, and watched the beam sweep out across the water. When it came round again the herd had walked into the sea, and the mountains of the far coast had risen where they had stood, pale and patient. He wrote in the ledger that the lamp was lit at dusk and the weather fair, then added company on the strand, then struck the last word through and wrote company gone home instead.
