Black and grey rose down the upper back

Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A rose in bloom sits on the upper back, with its stem extending down the centre of the spine. The shading is soft and wash-like, with dark blacks and light greys giving the petals a loose, painterly look. The flower is centred in the frame against a blurred wooden background, with the stem drawn as a fine, tapering line.

You learned on Scarrow that nothing grows in the salt wind unless you stop fighting it. The old glasshouse above Mill Cove had been empty since the Pell sisters left, and the only thing still blooming there in February was the black rose, which nobody remembered planting. Its petals opened grey at the edges and darker at the heart, as if someone had rinsed a brush once and let the water bleed across the paper.

Your mother said the roots drank spilled lamp oil from the lighthouse years back. You didn't believe her until you snipped a cutting and it wept a thin black line down your wrist that dried like wash. On the Tuesday the ferry failed to come, you carried the cutting down to the slip in a jam jar wrapped in your father's oilcloth, meaning to plant it somewhere with better light.

Halfway down the path the stem slipped from your fingers and its tip touched the wet stones. It drew itself out in one tapering line, thinning as it ran toward the water, the way rain runs down a window when the glass is cooling. Where it met the tide it stopped, and the sea would not take it.

By dusk the cove had a new mark on it, and the ferry came in on schedule with the Pell sisters aboard, both of them asking after the rose. You told them it had gone where things go once they are finished being looked after, and you handed back the empty jar.
