Black and grey rose on a wrist
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large rose in full bloom is the central subject, with a second partly hidden bloom and several leaves beneath it. The rose is shaded in smooth greys with bright highlights on the petals, set against a dark background that fades into rays of light across the upper forearm. The composition is a close shot of the wrist and lower arm, with the tattoo wrapping across the skin.

The clockwork on the gallery had seized again, so Hannah Mair wound the lamp by hand that night, one turn for every breath she could hold. The glass threw its rays out over the Skerry and across the black water, and she kept her eye on the swell beyond the reef, where the Kestrel should have been an hour since.

Her father had planted the rose in a tin bath the summer her mother died, and it had outlived him by eleven winters. It was the only thing on the rock that bloomed in colour by day, though at night the petals went to pewter in the lamplight and the leaves sank into shadow. She had lost two blooms to the wind that spring. The third had opened on the Tuesday, heavy and close, its inner petals still folded like a fist.
At half past two the Kestrel's lantern showed beyond the reef, low and tilting. Hannah counted the sweeps of the beam and watched the boat come round the north ledge, near enough now to hear the engine cough. She went down the iron stair with the rose in her hand, cut clean with her mother's knife, and when the bow bumped the landing Tom Gilchrist reached up for the rope and found a grey bloom pressed into his palm instead.
'For Marion,' Hannah said. 'Tell her the light was on.' He laughed, not unkindly, and tucked it inside his oilskin before he tied off, and she climbed back up to the gallery to wind the spring again.
