Black and grey realism tattoo on an upper arm and forearm showing a rose, script words and a dove over smoky shading.

Black and grey rose, script and dove on an arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large sleeve-style tattoo covers the upper arm and part of the forearm. A shaded rose sits near the shoulder, while partly visible script words run across smoky, cloud-like shading, and a dove with outstretched wings appears on the forearm. The work is rendered in black and grey with soft gradients and high contrast against a dark background and a blue t-shirt.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Oakes wanted the four words done before the chapel roof came down, and she was particular about the order. Charity first, she said, because that was what the place had been built on, then Patience, Diligence and Kindness. She'd pay me extra if the letters were plain enough for the Harvest children to read from the back pews, though I never did learn which of them she thought would be reading.

I worked from a ladder with a flat brush and a tin of lamp black thinned with turpentine, starting at the top where the plaster was driest. The damp came up through the wall like weather. Every morning the words had blurred a little further into the grey of the render, so I stopped fighting it and let the shading run under the letters the way smoke rolls under a door. By the second week the rose the vicar's wife had painted by the porch was bleeding into the Diligence and I had to decide whether to scrape it off or let them share the wall.

I let them share it. When I came back after the frost, Mrs Oakes stood in the aisle with her coat buttoned to the neck and read the wall slowly, the way you read a letter from someone you have not forgiven. She said the words looked as though they were being breathed on, and that was exactly right, because that was how the whole parish talked about virtues these days, half remembered and half fogged over.

I had painted a dove on the lintel above the door without being asked, a few quick strokes with the tip of the brush. She didn't say anything about it. She just went out into the cold and left the door open, and the bird sat there in the thin light with the smoke of the wall behind it, looking as if it had only just arrived.
