The swift kept pace with the cart all the way from Salt Wash, dropping low over the ruts and rising again whenever the wheels hit stone. Old Hesketh said it was a sign. His wife said it was hungry, and she tossed it crumbs of hard bread at every rest stop until the bird would land on the tailboard and eat from her palm.

By the fourth day the water barrel was half empty and the road bent north toward nothing but white flats. Hesketh took the reins himself and said little. That night the swift did not come down to roost. It circled the fire three times, then flew off west into the dark, low and straight, the way a bird flies when it knows exactly where the water is.
They followed it in the morning, the cart groaning behind them, and by noon they came over a rise to find a seep of green under a split boulder, a pool no wider than a tabletop. The swift was already bathing in it, throwing water over its back and shaking its black feathers bright.
Hesketh filled every cask he owned and never once asked the bird for anything else. Years later, on the road to Dry Creek, his granddaughter would point whenever a swift crossed the sky, and the old man would tip his hat to it as if it were a neighbour who had once lent him a spade.
