Outlined roses on both thighs
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the upper thighs of a person wearing light wash denim high-waisted shorts with turned-up cuffs and black knee-high socks, against a floral wallpaper. Two clusters of open roses with leaves are tattooed in black outline on each thigh, with the largest bloom sitting near the top of the thigh. The linework is thin and mostly unshaded, and the image is in black and grey with no colour ink.

Sit in close, the lamp only warms one knee at a time, and you'll each get your turn. Tonight it's the roses, the ones the old drawing-woman made before Hollin Dome had soil to grow anything in. Her name was Marrit Tulk. She worked with a wire nib and whatever black the cookhouse could spare, because nobody had colour to spare.

She didn't draw one rose. She drew two clusters for her brother, who had walked the outer ring for eleven years and came home with his legs as thin as cable. She inked them where the sun-suit had torn, so every step he took would carry a bloom on each side. The largest rose sat high, open as a bowl, its petals drawn with lines so fine the lamp had to be tilted before you could see them. Lower down, a second bloom leaned in towards it, and between them she put leaves, sharp at the edges, turned the way wind turns them in the vents.
The children asked why she kept the lines so thin. She said thick lines are for people who mean to stay put. Thin lines bend round a knee, and they keep their shape even when the ink goes pale. Her brother wore the roses for thirty years, and when the greenhouse lights finally came back on, the grafters trained their first rose along the shape of her drawing, petal for petal. The old men swore you could still find her line in every bloom.
So tomorrow, when you walk the ring with your buckets, look down at the leaves on the rail and count the points on each one. Then go to bed, and mind the thin lines. They're the ones that last.
